The young people are students of the master's degree course in Teaching and Communication of Natural Sciences at the University of Bologna, specifically the BIGEA department, which offered them the opportunity to organize a Third Mission event and develop topics that were close to their hearts.
Working with this group of students was stimulating, thanks to their enthusiasm and strong motivation (despite the very tight deadlines and the simultaneous exam session).
Before meeting them, we must admit that we thought, “Another festival on science communication?” But during our discussions, the students convinced us with their idea: to fill some needs that they themselves had experienced firsthand.
The Festival aims to be a space for dialogue, collaborative learning, and civic engagement for students and recent graduates of the master's program.
The concept of “science education” is not only a reference to science teaching for future teachers, but also to the acquisition of critical thinking skills and the contextualization of science from a historical, philosophical, and social point of view.

We listened to them and invited them to reflect on their vision for the Festival during a series of online workshops, ultimately defining the pillars of the brand: mission, vision, values, desired character and atmosphere, and target audience.
We then created the visual identity, starting from the concept developed and an analysis of the context.
The logo is inspired by the concept of connection with the handwritten “e” becoming an icon of connections and a reference to the world of school education.
The color palette recalls the colors of science, with material references to the natural sciences.
We proposed drawing on the iconography of historical herbarium illustrations to evoke the concept that science can be understood within an artistic and historical sensibility. Furthermore, with this iconographic choice, it will be possible to maintain variety and consistency for each edition of the festival, drawing on different (copyright-free) illustration books: seeds, inflorescences, fruits, mushrooms, marine flora...
